Communities at Play

Communities at Play 2025

Welcome to life in the sand—literally! Communities At Play was created in 2023 as a way Sandbox Mutual Insurance could give back to deserving communities across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba to make play structures more safe, educational, and inclusive for all kids. This year, five lucky groups will receive $25,000 in funding for a brand-new or renovated playground. So, if you're in the middle of or just starting a playground project in one of the three provinces Sandbox operates in, Communities At Play is for you!

HOW IT WORKS

Beginning in the early spring each year, playground project organizers have the opportunity to submit an application requesting a $25,000 donation from Sandbox for building their play structure. Playground projects that will be completed in 2025 and are in Alberta, Manitoba, or Saskatchewan are eligible to apply.

On April 1st, Sandbox will close the applications and our staff will vote on which organizations are the right fit for this new outdoor space.  And for the very first time, we're inviting YOU to vote for one of the winners. Don't forget to sign up for emails to be the first to know when voting opens!

HERE'S WHAT PAST RECIPIENTS HAVE TO SAY

Receiving funds through the Communities at Play program and Sandbox Mutual Insurance greatly assisted with the overall costs and fundraising efforts for the Touchwood Park Accessible Playground Project in 2024. It has been wonderful to see this Accessible Playground project come to life and the many daily visitors that make this playground part of their day. Thank you to the Communities at Play Program and Sandbox Mutual Insurance for being a part of this project and for selecting Touchwood Park as a 2024 recipient.

In 2023, Douglasdale School was a recipient of the Communities at Play Program from Sandbox Insurance. The Communities at Play Program was invaluable to our project as it had just come to fruition as the pandemic hit, companies and individuals were cautious with their resources and donations. This added to the challenges associated with fundraising for a public-school playground. As our timeline drew closer to our projected build we were actually looking to reduce our project’s scope, when we got the news about being a recipient. Without the Communities at Play Program we would not have finalized our project when or how we did. Since the new playground has opened, it has been a constant gathering place for students of varied needs within our school and among the broader community. There is a sense of community pride and ownership for the space – it has been a long time since we have seen this kind of engagement over a space within our community. It is very common to now see families and friends gathering to play and having picnics on evenings and weekends. We are truly grateful to the generosity of Sandbox Insurance and their Communities at Play Program!
