We are on the search for a permanent full-time position of Manager, Accounting. Reporting to the Vice President, Finance & Chief Risk Officer, the successful candidate will manage accounting activities and provide accounting expertise, guidance, and advice to the Company. This position is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the accounting department, serves as a member of the management team and contributes to the development of corporate strategy and future planning.
As Manager, Accounting, YOU Will Be Responsible For
- Providing clear leadership and direction; managing the operations of the accounting department; answering questions, reviewing decisions and Monitoring general workload and production levels.
- Day-to-day management of accounting projects and priorities and for coordinating work effort with other departments.
- Financial and statistical reports including financial statements, reinsurance accounting, investments, and regulatory filings.
- Optimizing accounting processes to create efficiencies and enhance customer service.
- Development, communication and implementation of accounting best practices, policies, and procedures to accounting staff formally documented in an accounting procedures manual.
- Providing support in the implementation, monitoring, and reporting of internal controls.
- Responding to and settling major inquiries and complaints from accounting staff, other departments, brokers, and policyholders.
- Developing and maintaining positive relationships with external auditors and actuaries.
- Providing support in recruitment, work assignments, professional development, and performance management of accounting staff.
- Participation in strategic planning for the Company.
- Acting as a role model who supports a positive organizational culture.
What We Need From YOU!
- Education: Professional accounting designation.
- Experience: Five or more years accounting experience; three or more years demonstrated experience leading and managing high performing teams.
- Financial acumen: Extensive knowledge of accounting principles and auditing practices. Has an extensive understanding of investments and capital markets. Has functional and technical knowledge of reinsurance.
- Insurance acumen: General knowledge of insurance underwriting, claims and reinsurance.
- Analytical skills: Ability to visualize, articulate, conceptualize, or solve problems by making logical and reasonable decisions given the available information.
- Innovative: Detail oriented with a commitment to innovation.
- Project planning skills: Project management and coordinating skills with the proven ability to handle multiple tasks and make decisions in a rapidly changing environment. Able to set priorities for self and overall department by creating a focus, eliminating roadblocks, and knowing what will help or hinder goal accomplishment. Manages project deadlines and assigns work based on employees’ abilities and competence.
- Technology knowledge: Strong understanding of operating systems functionality and data warehousing to develop sound reporting/accounting strategies, drive new initiatives and support processing efficiencies.
- Human resources management skills: Managerial skills including interviewing and selecting employees, providing constructive feedback, motivating, conducting performance reviews, and training and development.
- Developing others: Practices a ‘hands-on’ approach when directing and empowering employees to be successful through training, developing, and coaching. Holds people accountable by ensuring they meet individual and organizational objectives in an appropriate manner. Monitors employee development plans and ensures alignment with department and company goals.
